Carbon Nanotubes from Old Plastic Bags: A major development

An "upcycling" method of converting waste plastic bags into nanotubes has been developed at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. In this path breaking method, 1 gm pieces of high or low-densitty polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) were cooked at high temperatures (700 degrees C) which broke down the chemical bonds of plastic and cause carbon nanotubes to grow on pieces of the cobalt acetate catalyst.

Dow’s polyols expansion project in Netherlands comes on stream

Dow Chemical has completed polyols expansion at its plant at Terneuzen, The Netherlands. With this expansion, capacity at the site will increase by 180,000 tpa, raising capacity to 530,000 tpa. With guarded optimism, SABIC estimates 2010 as a positive year

As supplies rise in the United States, oil prices have been mixed. Prices have slipped marginally on the Nymex to US$76.4, while Brent North Sea crude for delivery in January rose to settle at US$78.336.

BASF to bring back Ludwigshafen cracker on stream

BASF has brought back its cracker with capacity to produce 220,000 tpa ethylene at Ludwigshafen, idled in April, on stream. The company had, in September, announced a “warm-up phase” for the cracker. Affected by a weakening demand, BASF announced a minimum 3-month provisional shut down of its 220,000 mtpa capacity steam cracker at Ludwigshafen site starting mid-April.

Global TPE demand will rise by 6% pa through 2013 reaching 4.2 mln tons as per a report by Freedonia. China will make up 42% of new demand.
