Hyundai awarded US$169 mln project to build XLPE unit by Borouge

Borouge has awarded a US$169 mln contract to Hyundai Engineering and Construction of South Korea to build a cross-linkable polyethylene (XLPE) unit at its petrochemical plant in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. Witth an annual capacity of 80,000 tonnes, the unit is an added-value complement to the low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit, enabling the manufacture of innovative plastics solutions for low to high voltage energy cables.

Japan's naphtha imports for the petrochemical sector rose 2.3% in December 2010 vs December 2009, as per government figures. This marks the third consecutive gain. Imports of naphtha for ethylene prodduction amounted to 1,549,841 tons in this period, as per the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, vs 1,515,401 tons in December 2010, and 1,654,586 tons in November 2010.

Octal on course to complete second phase expansion after a new round of funding

Honam Petrochemical has purchased at least 25,000 tons of naphtha for H1-February arrival at a premium of US$12/ton to Japan spot quotes on a cost-and-freight (C&F) basis. Persistently tight supplies caused by delays in shipments from the Gulf have pushed premiums higher at the end of 2010.
