Uflex, India's packaging producer has selected Mexico for installation of its US$108 mln polyester film project. The company said that the 125,000 tpa flexible plastics film plant will be erected in AAltamira, located in northeastern Mexico's Tamaulipas state.

Mitsubishi Chemicals to cut naphtha cracker runs from Sept

Following its Japanese counterparts -Sumitomo Chemical Co, Mitsui Chemicals Inc and Asahi Kasei Corp, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp plans to lower production at its naphtha crackers. Sumitomo Chemical and Asahi Kasei have cut ethylene output by about 5% since July and Mitsui Chemicals plans to reduce output by 10% between August and September.

Shutdowns at Styrene Monomer plants across Asia

Operators of 7 petrochem plants in Houston and Texas Gulf Coast reach a settlement for pollution matters

Operators of seven petrochemical plants in Houston and along the Texas Gulf Coast have reached a settlement with the state attorney general's office regarding pollution issues. The agreement, subject to approval by a judge, calls for Equistar and Millenium to each set aside US$500,000 to fund supplemental environmental projects identified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Huntsman to increase TPU prices in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Indian subcontinent

A turbine fault that has been restricting utilisation at its ethylene unit has pressured Czech oil group Unipetrol to shut down the ethylene unit for three weeks in October.
The company also plans too resolve additional faults that have halted production of injection grade high density polyethylene.

Environmental clearance for ONGC-Mangalore Petrochemicals' Aromatic Complex

Environmental clearance has been received for an Aromatic Complex, to be set up in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by ONGC-Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd (a Special Purpose Vehicle of ONGC-MRPL). A process that converts PS, PET and mixed plastics into biodegradable polymer

A research group based at University College Dublin claims it can convert plastics such as polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and mixed plastics into a biodegradable polymer. The team has successfully converted PS to a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) that is flexible, heat stable and water resistant, using the bacterium Pseudomonas putida CA-3.

Honam's Yeosu aromatics plant heading for catalyst change

October will see a seven day shutdown at South Korea's Honam Petrochemicals' aromatics plant at Yeosu for a catalyst change. Total capacity at the site includes 150,000 tpa of benzene, 78,000 tpa of ttoluene and 47,000 tpa of solvent-grade mixed xylenes.
