PKN Orlen’s Q1-09 earnings hit by decline in oil price, petrochemical margins

Poland’s largest oil refiner PKN Orlen is anticipating a fall in Q1-09 earnings by a decline in the value of oil inventories and narrower margins on petrochemicals.

A decline in the value of oil stored in Orlen’s tanks cut earnings by as much as 300 mln zloty (US$88 mln) in the first quarter, compared with a 326 million-zloty gain in the comparable period of 2008.

LyondellBasell plans to cut 17% workforce, reduce expenses

In a bid to offset the current sales volume and margin weakness, LyondellBasell plans to cut 3,000 jobs, about 17% of its workers and reduce expenses by an additional US$500 mln by 2010. Oil prices extend losses as equities spiral lower

New York's main futures contract, light sweet crude for May delivery, dipped by a dollar to hover slightly above US$50, while Brent North Sea crude for May stands at US$52.7. A more than one dollar faall was seen in oil prices in response to concerns over falling global stock markets in response to news that recession has deepened in Europe in Q4-08, broadening recession and the bearish outlook for energy demand, coupled with the strengthening dollar, that makes dollar-priced crude more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

Linde, Sinopec subsidiary join forces for industrial gases supply in Chongqing, China

The Linde Group has secured a contract with Sinopec Sichuan Vinylon Works (SVW) to jointly build gas plants and produce industrial gases for the long-term supply to SVW's chemical complex. This collabboration will result in an initial investment of approximately EUR 50 mln.
