La Seda De Barcelona to close down 5 petrochemical plants, lay off workers

La Seda De Barcelona plans to close 5 plants and raise funds to concentrate on production of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as per it’s restructuring program.
La Seda will lay off over 300 workerss and sell off Simpe plant in Italy, Portalegre in Portugal, Volos in Greece, TurkPet in Turkey and IQA in Tarragona, Spain and raise between €250-320 mln to meet conditions laid out by its banking syndicate to refinance the company.

Lower petrochemicals and metals prices leed to a sharp drop in Q2 net profit compared to the same period in 2008, although it reversed a net loss posted in Q1-09.

June petrochem naphtha imports in Japan dip by 18%

Japan's naphtha imports for the petrochemical sector fell 18 percent in June from the previous month as per the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Imports of naphtha for ethylene production ammounted to 960,823 tons (1,399,098 kilolitres) last month, compared with 1,169,478 tons (1,696,561 kl) in May.

New ASA grades for food contact applications that comply with EU's GMP regulation

BASF is offering three new Luran S (ASA) grades in Europe in its line of styrenic specialties approved specifically for food contact applications. Romanian government to fund Oltchim’s acquisition of Petrom assets

40-50 workers to lose jobs as Sunoco plans closure of ethylene unit at Claymont refinery

Sunoco plans closure of the ethylene unit at Claymont refinery that was damaged in an explosion due to pipe failure in May. The pipe failure led to release of combustible ethylene unit feed gas. The cclosure of the unit due to insufficient demand will result in lay offs of 40 to 50 workers.

ExxonMobil Chemical to up PP compounding capacity at French facility to meet automotive demand

ExxonMobil Chemical is investing in increased polypropylene (PP) compounding capacity and capability at its Lillebonne Polypropylene Plant (LPP), France. Capacity will increase by 45,000 tons to meet growing demand for Exxtral™ performance polyolefins from automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) primarily in Europe.
