Sinopec's Maoming resumes ethylene production at 40% capacity at plant No 2
Sinopec's Maoming refinery has resumed ethylene production at 40% of capacity. The 640,000 tpa ethylene facility has been shut for two weeks due to a fire indirectly caused by lightning shocks. A smalller ethylene unit with 380,000 tpa capacity restarted two days after the fire on June 3.

Oil prices plunge after spiking to all-time high of US$139.89
World oil prices plunged to US$134 from all-time highs of US$140 amid uncertainty over Saudi Arabia's pledge to increase production output. Saudi Arabia was reported to be planning an oil output increease by 200,000 bpd in July.

Production starts at Lotte Daesan MEG plant with Shell's OMEGA process technology
Production has commenced at Lotte Daesan's 400,000 tpa MEG facility in Korea on 21 May using new Shell OMEGA (Only Mono-Ethylene Glycol Advanced) process technology. This process uses catalytic converrsion of ethylene oxide to monoethylene glycol (MEG) as opposed to the traditional thermal conversion approach.

SK Energy and Sinopec JV to set up naphta cracker in Central China

4 killed as fire breaks out at Reliance petrochem unit
A fire broke out in a section of Reliance Industries' plant No. 2 with a capacity to produce 60,000 tpa of LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) at Nagothane in Maharashtra on Friday. Four people haave been killed after the fire, and about 15 have been injured at the fire which occurred after the plant was shut down for routine maintenance about 24 hours earlier.

Dow Europe plans to increase polypropylene prices by Euro 50/ton, with effect from 1 June 2008. PP prices will go up by EUR 50/ton in Europe, India, the Middle East and Africa. This is Dow's attempt tto restore margins to prevent business from becoming unaffordable and to avoid having to make asset decisions at a time of strong demand.

LyondellBasell announces €100 hike per ton of polyethylene in Europe
With effect from June 1, 2008, LyondellBasell Industries has increased prices by €100/ton of all its polyethylene grades sold in Europe. Swelling feedstock and energy costs that have been eroding comppany margins since the beginning of the year have forced this increase.

Sinopec to cut ethylene output by 65000 tons to raise oil supply
This month will see China Petrochemical Corp. (Sinopec), reducing ethylene output by 65,000 tons, and also reduce aromatic hydrocarbon production by 8%. This reduction in ethylene production will be ssubstituted by an increase in oil supplies of almost 200,000 tons towards earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts, the summer grain harvest and the forthcoming Olympics.

2 ethylene units with capacity exceeding 1 mln tpa closed due to fire at Maoming
A fire that broke out on Tuesday evening at Maoming refinery has forced closure of two ethylene units with total capacity of over 1 mln tpa. The refinery is Sinopec's second largest in terms of capaciity.

China and South Korea have expressed an interest in investing in a joint petrochemical project undertaken by Ecuador and Venezuela. The refinery, Refineria del Pacifico, with a capacity to process 3000,000 bpd of crude, will Ecuador to meet domestic demand for gasoline as well as export it.

Turcas plans to invest US$3 bln in newly acquired Petkim
Turkish energy company Turcas plans to invest US$3 bln over the next five years in petrochemicals company Petkim, in which it has recently acquired a 51% stake. The Azerbaijani-Turkish consortium has formally acquired the majority shares of Turkey's Petrochemical Holding Co.

Workers observe cease-work at HPL due to non payment of dues by agency
18 contract labourers attached to the Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd. (HPL) observed a cease-work after the agency that recruited them, allegedly failed to clear their dues. The workers are backed by Citu and belong to the Citu-affiliated HPL Employees' Union.

Under the EU merger regulations, the European Commission has cleared the formation of the RusVinyl joint venture between SolVin and Siberian-Ural Petrochemical. The JV will invest EUR 650 mln in a worrld-scale fully integrated vinyls plant in Kstovo, Russia.
