According to data from Chinese customs, China's polymer imports rose 15.8% month over month in July, as per ChemOrbis, and 0.9% year on year (yoy). Homo-PP, PP copolymer and LDPE posted strong year oover year gains, while imports of PVC and PS were down (yoy).

Fire at a PetroChina subsidiary Dalian Petrochemical

As fire broke out at a major petrochemical refinery in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian. This is the second fire in two months at PetroChina subsidiary Dalian Petrochemical. The fire is reporteed to have occurred in a diesel tank containing 800 tons of fuel.

July naphtha imports in Japan for the petrochemical sector fell 9.7% in July 2011 from July 2010, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline after a massive earthquake in March.
Impports of naphtha for ethylene production amounted to 1,800,893 kilolitres (1,234,751 tons) in July 2011, as per the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Azerikimya's ethylene-propylene plant shut for capital repairs

State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has shut ethylene-propylene plant of its chemical sub-company Azerikimya for about a month for capital repairs. Continuing until early September, the repair willl encompass technological, mechanical and electrical equipment, including automation systems, and will involve specialized teams of mechanical & repair, repair & construction and transport departments of Azerikimya.

BP PLC and Indian polyester manufacturer JBF Group have inked a deal for feedstock supply by the UK energy giant to a new manufacturing unit to be built by JBF, as per Dow Jones Newswire. Contract between Amyris and Kuraray to develop innovative polymer from Biofene™
